After discussing the property and expected power use with the owners, a 3 kW off grid solar system was selected as a suitable fit for their needs.
The couple would be the main occupants, with occasional visits from family and friends. The system needed to provide enough power for everyday use without requiring them to constantly limit appliances or switch lights off.

Yandina Off Grid Solar System
The property already had a 9 x 6 metre shed positioned with a north facing roof. The 3 kW stand alone solar system was installed on the shed before construction of the new home began.
The proposed house site sits further down the hill, allowing power to be supplied from the shed once the build is complete.
In the meantime, the owners installed lighting and power points in the shed to run a fridge, washing machine, water pump, microwave, kettle and other appliances during their stays.
Power for the Property and Future Home
The system provides enough power for the couple’s everyday needs and additional capacity when family and friends visit. It also gives them access to power while building the new home.
The solar array and inverter are both rated at 3 kW. The battery bank stores approximately three days of electrical energy without sunshine, based on the owners’ preferred level of backup.
A 5 kVA generator was also included as a backup source if additional power is required during extended periods of poor weather.
Control Panel and System Components
- 12 x 250 watt Suntech solar panels
- 3 kW solar array
- Midnite Solar 80 amp MPPT solar charger
- Outback VFX 3024E 3000 watt and 85 amp inverter charger
- 12 x 1080 amp hour Exide Energystore deep cycle batteries
- 5 kVA generator backup
The control panel brings the major system components together in one accessible location, making the system easier to operate and maintain.

Battery Storage for Three Days of Autonomy
The battery bank uses 12 Exide Energystore deep cycle batteries, each rated at 1080 amp hours.
The battery enclosure keeps the storage system organised and protected while providing the capacity required for approximately three days without solar generation.
This gives the owners reliable power for the shed now and a practical foundation for supplying the future home.
