Small Cabin Off-Grid Solar Systems

Perfect for Weekenders and Shearers’ Quarters

Not every off-grid property needs a huge solar power system. A well-designed 2–3 kW system can supply all the power you need —
quietly, efficiently, and without relying on a generator.

At Stand-Alone Power Systems, we design and install small off-grid solar systems across Queensland that are simple, reliable, and built to last.

Why Choose a Small Off-Grid Solar System?

A 3 - 4 kW solar system is ideal for cabins or quarters that are:

Used Occasionally

Perfect for weekenders or seasonal worker accommodation that doesn't need constant power

Low Demand

Efficiently runs lights, small appliances, a fridge/freezer, and water pump

Remote Locations

Too far from grid power to justify expensive connection fees of $20,000–$40,000

Rather than spending $20,000 – $40,000 to bring grid power in, a small solar + battery set up gives you independence at a fraction of the cost.

What a 2–3 kW System Can Power

A correctly sized 2–3 kW off-grid system can comfortably run the essentials for a small cabin. A 2 - 3 kW system will actually make between 9 - 12+ kWh per day. Here's a typical load profile:
Appliance LoadDaily Energy (kWh)
Large fridge/freezer1 kWh per day
Washing Machine1 kWh per day
Kitchen Appliances (microwave, dishwasher, kettle, toaster etc)1-2 kWh
Vacuum0.5 kWh per day
Workshop tools (electric saws, drills, grinders, welders etc)2-3 kWh per day
Entertainment1 kWh per day
Air conditioner2 kWh per day
Lights/charging0.5 kWh
Water pump0.8 kWh
Daily Energy11.3 kWh
With this setup, you can run lights, refrigeration, basic electronics, and even a small pressure pump without stressing the system.

Typical System Components

Lithium Battery Advantage

Many small systems used to rely on lead-acid batteries, but today we recommend LiFePO₄ (lithium iron phosphate) batteries for almost all applications.
This makes lithium ideal for smallcabins that need to run reliably when you arrive — even after sitting idle for a week or two.

System Sizing for Cabins

Sizing a cabin system correctly is essential. Too small, and you'll be running the generator constantly. Too large, and you may overspend unnecessarily.

We recommend starting with these steps:
From there, we design a system that can supply your daily energy needs, plus battery capacity to cover 1– 3 days of autonomy (cloudy weather).

Generator Integration

Even small cabins benefit from having a generator input. We often configure:

Manual Generator Connection

For infrequent use

Automatic Generator Start

Optional, so the batteries are charged before you arrive

This means you never have to arrive to a flat battery bank — the generator can top up the system if needed.

Installation & Cost

A small cabin system is surprisingly affordable.

While exact costs depend on site conditions and components, most of our 2 – 4 kW systems start from around:

Starting From

$12,000 – $16,000

• Including rebates (solar STCs and Federal Govt. Battery Rebates)

• Expandable design – add more panels or batteries later

This makes them a great value option compared to grid connection costs, which can easily exceed $20,000 for even short distances.

Maintenance and Longevity

Small systems still need to be looked after to deliver years of service. We recommend:

Annual Inspection:

Check panels, cable connections, and clean if necessary

Battery Monitoring:

Check state of charge and cycle history

Firmware Updates:

Keep inverter and controller
software current

With proper care, you can expect 15 – 20 years from the solar array and 10+ years from the battery bank.

Proudly Serving Queensland for Almost Two Decades

Designed for extreme heat, dust, and rural conditions

Real-World Example: Cabin Retreat West of Toowoomba

One of our installations was a 2.4 kW system for a cabin retreat West of Toowoomba. The system runs 12 LED lights, fridges/freezers, washing machine, dishwasher, entertainment system, and a small water pump.
